BPA University

The BPA held it's annual University on 6th June in London. Andrew Parks of Air Business attended the University, where there is a choice of seminars to suit both those new to BPA and those who have a strategic interest in the development of the industry.

Andrew reports a very interesting event, and for the B2B publisher the topic of e-mail re-registration campaigns was of particular interest. Publishers have reported very high response rates, and e-mail has proved to be more cost effective than telephone or direct mail re-registrations. The 'short format' re-registration option, where a reader whose demographic profile is less than 3 years old, just has to confirm his desire to continue receiving a publication rather than re-submit his demographic profile, was also discussed. Finally the rule changes to include Paid Subscribers as Qualified Readers were reviewed.

You can contact the BPA by calling (0) 20 7731 2542 via their web-site at
www.bpai.com.

BPA Rule Changes - Update

Since the announcement of the BPA rules changes and resulting changes to the reporting requirements, R.E.D. have been developing the R.E.D. BPA Module in order to incorporate the changes with as little impact on our users as possible.

The changes are now being tested, and details of the release date will be issued to all users of the BPA Module as soon as the new facilities are ready.

Customer Service and IT Support Exhibition report by Jules

The "Customer Service and IT Support 2001" show was a three day event held at Olympia at the end of April. As well as the exhibition itself there were two seminar and conference programs, the 'CSS Free Seminar Program' and the 'E-service and E-support Conference Program'.

The CSS Free Seminar Program ran for the entire event and featured over 30 sessions. These seminars were split to cover two areas, "Technology" and "People and Process Workshops". They covered the keys areas facing help-desk and customer service professionals today, using case studies to give advice and insights into the potential benefits and possible pitfalls that today's technology solutions offer. The seminar I attended on 'Self Support' was very popular.

The E-service and E-support Conference Program was for senior helpdesk and customer service management. The program covered delivering higher levels of service and support to customers whilst reducing overhead costs.

There was also the "Psychometric Testing Village" which was designed to help identify the qualities that create a customer focused service and support culture within an organization.

JB's Hot Tip

Print That Screen

It can often be useful to print the contents of a screen, either to send the information to someone else, or just to keep a record of setting or controls in something you have just set up. Many of you will have noticed that pressing the Print Screen button when your PC is running the Windows operating system that precisely nothing come out of any printer! Read on…

To capture a screen when running a Windows program: Begin by pressing the Print Screen button which is the one usually placed to right of function key F12. Then launch a copy of Word (or another editor such as Wordpad) and press right-click > paste (or ctrl-v) and as if by magic the screen display you have just 'captured' will appear and you can then print it by sending the document to the printer.

If you intend to send a Fax of this document to anybody please choose the largest font possible which allows the screen dump to fit on A4 paper so that the letters and digits are legible on the fax received at the other end! Once you have the screen in a document you can also e-mail that screen by including the document as an attachment.

To capture the contents of a window running a DOS program: Sometimes there is a need to capture the information shown in different parts of a DOS program. Begin by ensuring that the DOS program is running in a window and not occupying the whole screen, (use Alt-Enter). Then right-click on any part of the window title bar and pick Edit followed by Mark. Select the area of the window you are interested in, either by use of the down-arrow and right-arrow keys keeping the shift key pressed all the time, or by dragging the mouse pointer while keeping the left button depressed. Then right-click on the title bar again and pick Edit followed by Copy Enter. Now open an empty Word or Wordpad document and paste in the window contents you have just selected. Press return to move the cursor to the beginning of the next available line and you will be ready to capture more information. (Don't forget the use of alt-tab to quickly switch between programs!)

When you have finished pasting into the document, select the whole document with ctrl-a and change the font to a non-proportional one with Format > Font.

Wish Granted….

The 'log label' facility in the circulation software has been extended so that labels can be logged when adding or renewing subscribers - a good idea from Rob at Maney Publishing.
