MORE SPACE AND AIR
CONDITIONING MADE
TOTAL 2000 A
PLEASURE TO ATTEND
A highlight of the Summer was a very successful Total Publishing Show at the new Earls Court venue. For those who had attended previous Total shows the extra space and the air conditioning were a welcome improvement.

The free seminars included a very interesting presentation on paid subscriptions, in three parts. The first part included advice on setting up and analyzing a successful marketing campaign given by consultant Alan Weaver. Jayne Hannaway of Time Inc Europe presented an insight into the behavior of repeat payment method subscriptions (such as Direct Debit) and the advantages of Partnership marketing. Finally, Julian Turner of Electric Word plc presented his views on marketing high value newsletters.
We at R.E.D. were happy to
welcome so many clients
and take numerous requests
for our new FREE demo CD.

Jolly Things

All change! We said a fond farewell to Nik (the programmer) in August, and are pleased to welcome Sam to the R.E.D. team:
"My name is Sam. I joined R.E.D Computing in September after completing a degree in Computing and Electronics at the University of Central England in Birmingham. I also play the guitar. I am currently working on the Windows version of the R.E.D software."
More Good News

Helen and Nicola had a very enjoyable day on the IRS boat trip. Thank you IRS for a lovely day cruising from Henley. IRS have been an R.E.D. Subscriptions user for many years and now form part of Charterhouse.

Well done to the Institute of Personnel Development on the granting of their Royal Charter. The CIPD are a long-time user of the R.E.D. software for the calculation of Royalties.

It is not often that we see our clients on TV, but Nicholas Spice from the London Review of Books was recently on the news commenting on the new Harry Potter Book.

Many congratulations to Karen from the RSM on the birth of her baby girl and to Fran on the arrival of her son. Best wishes to both families and we look forward to seeing photos of the bonny babies.

A free demo CD of the Windows program is now available, if you would like one give us a call.

Check out the new web ring, and you can add your website to the web-ring too. www.redcomputing.com/main/links.html.

RED Website Update

We are particularly pleased with the number of page requests for information from the R.E.D. website. It seems many of you are going on-line to access the user pages.

The R.E.D. website has recently been updated and now you can have a look at the R.E.D. Demo CD directly from the web. We have also added a new Links page with links to other useful Publishing related sites:
www.redcomputing.com/main/links.html.

The website contains downloadable manuals so if you think yours in out of date then get yourself an updated version at: www.redcomputing.com/userentry/subsmanual/documentation.html

You can also now find the Upgrading from DOS to Windows information, included forms to fill in for a quote at: www.redcomputing.com/productservice/windowsinfo.html

As well as sending out the paper newsletter we will be sending emails with a link to the website version of the newsletters so that more people can have faster access to the newsletter. If you or any of your colleagues want to be included in this send us your email address.

JB's HOT Tip: Virus Checker Disables Database…

Some virus scanners run in real time, (this means they are continually checking files on the disk drives). If you have a real time virus checker running on a file server storing a database that is in heavy use, the virus checker may lock one of the files that the database program wants to use. If this happens a 'File in Use' or 'Sharing Violation' type error message may be generated.

To prevent this happening, ask your IT department to configure the virus checker to ignore, (skip over), any files whose names indicate they may be in constant use.

For R.E.D. users, Pervasive / Btrieve Error 85 represents 'File In Use'. Configure the checker to skip files that have extensions of DBT and DDT, appearing in any folders that contain R.E.D. programs and data. If Error 85 still persists after this re-configuration, then ask for the file server to be re-booted; some other program on your network has locked the R.E.D. file.

Another (much less common) cause of 'File In Use', is when two workstations attempt to access the same database using two different modes. If one workstation uses the single-user database engine, then any other workstation that simultaneously attempts to use the multi-user engine, (via a 'requester'), will generate an Error 85.

New 'Publication List' Facilities

For those of you Subscriptions users who have not used a 'Pub-List' before, it is a facility that allows you to list publication issues. What is the benefit of this? Well, the most common use is to have more flexible issue descriptions to print on your letters and renewals (you could call an issue Spring 2001, for example).

However, recent software developments now mean that you can use the Pub-List to display the description on the subscription record screen where you would normally see your start and end issues.

Further more, the Pub-List approach can give you greater flexibility over the number of issues per year. This is very useful if your publisher plans to change the frequency of a journal on a regular basis, and may be of particular interest to academic journal publishers.

If you want any further information about this new facility then please let us know.

Additional Telephone / Fax / Email Address Screen

Many Subscriptions and Mailorder users are already using the new fourth address screen, and the new fields for Telephone, Fax, and Email. If you wish to start using the new fields then there are routines that will allow you to swap the information from the existing fields to the second screen. This has the advantage of freeing up fields on the first screen for any other information. If you use them already call to find out how to streamline data entry.
