ABC Geographical Analysis

The ABC requires a breakdown of regions and counties from audited publishers whose circulation is mainly UK. The breakdown requires all the subscribers in a county to be counted up then put into a regional total. An RED report created to do this automatically is now available - call for details.

Data Protection Act 1998

The Data Protection Act 1998 was brought into effect on the 1 March 2000 - which will bring the UK in line with the rest of Europe. It covers information stored on manual, paper rather than just records stored on computer or other media (including material gathered from the Internet) - which were covered in the 1984 Act. It will provide a better definition of the data owner and individual customers will have the right to ask for a complete printout of data held on them.

The majority of those who hold data on living individuals will need to register. Details can be obtained from The Office of Data Protection Register, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK4 5AF www.dataprotection.gov.uk, Enquires: 01625 545 745 To Register: 01625 545 740

Our roving reporters share their experiences of exhibitions you may be interested in

Chase Marketing Conference (attended 2nd and 3rd February by Jules and Nicola) The Charities and Associations Exhibition comprised of two days of seminars covering topics like IT planning in times of rapid change, data protection, effective design and print management, investing for income, event planning, and others which were more charity centric. You do not need to be from a charity to attend the event and some of the more general talks are relevant to most businesses. Details can be obtained from: www.conferencehouse.co.uk.

Marketing Guild Seminar (attended 11th February by Louise) The seminar was one of several run by the Marketing Guild (www.marketing-guild.com) and it was attended by about 40 people from a variety of small to medium companies - software houses, insurance companies, exhibition organizers, etc… The seminar consisted of a lecture punctuated by a few short discussions within buzz groups. The lecture centered on the Principle of Leverage, 7 things in the spectral thinking paradigm to increase profits: increase responses, improve conversation, cut waste, enhance frequency, increase size, raise prices and extend lifetime. The two main parts covered in seminar were how to increase responses and improve conversion. It was suggested that you ask you customer what they think of you in a novel way, so Which animal does RED represent to you?

Customer Service and Support Seminars (we missed this one this year) A series of free seminars which ran from the 11th -13th April, in the Olympia, London . It covered a wide range of topics such as: Knowledgment Management in the Service Industry, It's People who make the Difference, Staff Recruitment and Retention, Turning Infrastructure into Business Advantage and E-support and it's Effective Use. Details can be obtained from: www.cwss.uk.com

Direct marketing (attended 14th and 16th March by Nicola, Jules and Louise) A free exhibition (although some of the talks were pre-paid) which offers you a free gift for pre-registering (a rather nifty free cool bag, wine cooler and cork screw), It ran along side the New Media Marketing Exhibition, and registering for one gave you admission to both. The exhibitions ran from the 14th-16th March in the Wembley Conference and Exhibition Centre. Details can be obtained from: www.directmarketingfair.co.uk

If you have attended an Exhibition, Seminar or Training Course - don't keep it to yourself - let us know what you thought of it.

User Group
Kate We decided to hold the first User Group meeting of 2000 in our own offices! Fitting fifty or so people into our end room was definitely a challenge, but it was termed as 'cosy!'. Also thanks to our programmers who ceremoniously tidied their As always all attendees received an information pack. This time it included the London Review of Books' anniversary issue, some fact sheets on the EURO and Customer Loyalty from Lloyds Bank, and an extract from a report produced by the PPA on the future of Online Subscriptions.

For the first time ever, we were delighted to introduce an external speaker. Kate Ashley from the Publisher Relations Department of Blackwell's Subscription Agents gave a very interesting talk of the role of a Subscription Agent. This was very informative and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. desks and to Rachael for her tea and coffee making.

Kate prepared some interesting fact sheets for us, should you require a copy then please let us know.

This was followed by 'question time', an interactive discussion between a panel of users and the audience. A big thank you goes out to all of our speakers who did a very good job of answering all of the questions. The first topic was a clients' experience of using a envelope folding and stuffing machine. Lots of useful first hand information was providing on the pros and cons of having such a machine.

The second topic covered was the practical aspects of setting up and administering Direct Debits subscriptions using BACS. Our two speakers were able to give realistic, hands-on information, describing the difficulties involved when setting up BACS, that ultimately are outweighed by the benefits that can be gained in terms of ease of processing and increased renewal rates.

The final talks were given by R.E.D. One was on Database management including handy hints on how to maximize usage of your database, and facilities in R.E.D. to make your life easier! Secondly a short talk was given on the benefits of using Windows software. This was followed by special interest group gatherings allowing people to exchange ideas and mutual help.

During this session users were also given the opportunity to see a demo of the windows interface of the subs program and talk to all members of the R.E.D. customer services team and the programmers.

The next user group will be in approximately six months time. f anyone has a subject that they would like to share with us then don't forget to let us know!
